CIPL’s Natascha Gerlach Speaks at the European Business Summit 2025

On Thursday, 5 June, CIPL Director of Privacy and Data Policy Natascha Gerlach CIPP/E joined a panel at the European Business Summits 2025 event, discussing ‘Enhancing European Competitiveness Through Open and Secure Digital Ecosystems’.

She was joined by Tasos Stampelos (Mozilla), Els Bruggeman (euroconsumers), Bartlomiej Telejko (Google), and Jennifer Baker (EU Reporter).

As Europe moves from legislating to implementing key digital laws, such as the Digital Markets Act, Digital Services Act, Data Act, and Data Governance Act, the conversation is shifting toward how to deliver on the promises of these frameworks in a way that balances innovation, consumer protection, and data protection.

The panel addressed critical questions including:

  • How can data portability be implemented in a way that supports innovation and user choice, without undermining essential data protection safeguards?
  • What does it mean to prioritise data utility over data privacy, and who benefits from such a shift? How can we ensure that data-driven innovation remains aligned with fundamental rights?
  • How to ensure the DMA enforcement remains clear, proportionate, and focused on delivering real-world outcomes, namely, promoting consumer choice and market fairness while enabling responsible innovation.
  • How can digital innovation be made to work better, not just for industry, but for consumers and the broader economy?

At CIPL, we continue to engage with stakeholders across sectors to help shape digital policies that are pragmatic, rights-based, and innovation-enabling.

Thank you to fellow panelists and all who joined this exciting conversation!
