On 26 May, CIPL Privacy-Enhancing Technologies and Emerging Technologies Fellow Eden Tayyip joined two expert panels at the National Privacy Commission’s Privacy Awareness Week 2025.
Eden spoke alongside Anna Gamvros (A&O Shearman), Lori Baker (Dubai), and Mariana Gómez Rodríguez (Instituto Nacional de Transparencia, Acceso a la Información y Protección de Datos Personales (INAI)) on ‘Evolving Privacy Landscape: Demonstrating Accountability in Cross-Border Data Flows to Fuel Digital Job Growth’, and with Dominic P. (Future of Privacy Forum), Siriphon Kusonsinwut (PDPA Thailand), and Rob Real (GCash) on ‘Privacy Tech: Next-Gen Privacy Tools for a Global Job-Driven Framework’.
Eden highlighted why cross-border data flows are vital for the digital economy and AI development, emphasizing that AI systems thrive on large, diverse datasets sourced globally. He underscored the importance of multilateral frameworks like the Global CBPR Forum and the need to modernize existing transfer mechanisms to foster global interoperability. Eden also discussed the role of technological solutions, such as privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs), providing real-world examples where PETs have been successfully implemented in the context of data flows.
In his discussion on PETs, Eden shared insights into the evolving global landscape of PET adoption across both regulatory and industry spheres. He explored how organizations are deploying these tools, the practical challenges they face, and the trade-offs between data utility and privacy protection. Eden emphasized the need for clearer regulatory guidance to drive broader adoption and highlighted PETs as essential business enablers in today’s data-driven world. At the same time, he underscored that PETs are not a silver bullet, and should be integrated into a broader privacy and risk management toolkit.
