CIPL Comparison of US State Privacy Laws Data Protection Assessments

With the proliferation of privacy laws across various states in the US, companies with limited budgets and resources are seeking ways to synthesize requirements and harmonize compliance obligations across jurisdictions. To address this challenge, CIPL has launched a project aimed at identifying areas of alignment and divergence between state laws, and examining the compliance challenges faced by organizations as a result of these divergences. Our objective is to assist state policymakers in the US in advancing privacy and data protection principles in a more consistent and manageable manner.

For this purpose, our first paper focuses on analyzing data protection assessment requirements outlined in comprehensive state privacy laws. It addresses the challenges organizations encounter due to divergent regulations and urges state lawmakers to promote interoperability and convergence moving forward.
