CIPL’s Accountability Wheel

Organizational accountability is recognized as a key building block of effective privacy and data protection regulation and compliance. A well-developed, comprehensive accountability framework or program provides organizations with the tools and processes needed to implement relevant legal requirements and standards, as well as internal ethics standards and other internal “best practice” goals.

CIPL’s Accountability Framework contains seven core elements of accountability: leadership and oversight; risk assessment; policies and procedures (including on fairness and ethics); transparency; training and awareness; monitoring and verification; and response and enforcement.

This framework has been used by global businesses as a model for building comprehensive privacy and data governance programs, and it can equally be used in the AI context to build comprehensive governance programs that ensure responsible development and deployment of AI.
