CIPL is looking for an experienced Manager of Privacy and Data Policy to join our team in our London office. The Manager of Privacy and Data Policy will partner with our dynamic, global team of experts across all of our offices on a wide range of leading-edge privacy and data policy topics. This role reports to CIPL’s Director of Policy in Brussels and will also work closely with the CIPL’s President in London.
About the Role:
The Manager of Privacy and Data Policy will keep current on all policy developments linked to CIPL’s core topics. They will perform in-depth legal research, analysis and contribute to CIPL’s written materials in areas related to global privacy and data policy, accountability and organizational best practices and work closely with the CIPL team to develop strategies and implement project plans to advance CIPL’s global policy agenda. This includes in particular also, but is not limited to, the following topics: Developments regarding the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), ePrivacy and other EU privacy issues; the UK data protection reform bill; EU and UK AI strategies and legislative initiatives including the EU AIA; EU and UK digital/data policy developments such as the DMA, DA, DGA, DA and parallel UK developments; international developments in Children’s Privacy; the impact of data driven innovation, emerging technologies and privacy preserving technologies; international cross border data flow issues (e.g. EU-US Data Privacy Framework, EU BCR, SCCs, CBPR); Brazil, Latin America and Asia-Pacific data protection laws and developments; Accountability-based information management and privacy governance; global data sharing developments and best practices; privacy risk management; and effective privacy regulation and oversight.

Day-to-day Responsibilities Include:
- Prepare and edit written materials, including:
- Project white papers on a wide range of privacy law and data policy topics, in particular those relating to European, Brazil, Latin America and Asia-Pacific developments.
- Public consultation responses to European and UK data protection authorities and other global regulators.
- Presentations, talking points and summaries of CIPL papers and research.
- Meeting reports from CIPL workshops and roundtables, and other industry meetings and events.
- Blog posts including for the CIPL and Hunton Andrews Kurth Privacy Blog.
- Articles for various privacy publications
- Monitor and report on global privacy developments to CIPL leadership and to CIPL members, including on European, UK, Brazil, Latin America and Asia-Pacific developments and identify opportunities for CIPL engagement.
- Conduct special projects including empirical research on organizational best practices with CIPL members, analyse findings and draft benchmark reports.
- Take part in special privacy and data policy strategic consulting projects for CIPL members, other companies and governments.
- Maintain member relations and engage with individual CIPL members on substantive data privacy and data policy issues.
- Liaise with global data protection regulators (DPAs) and work to develop agendas, content and identify speakers for CIPL events with and for DPAs.
- Manage ongoing projects, including coordinating project input and publication schedules.
- Contribute to the development of new projects and ideas that further CIPL’s mission.
- Assist with special projects and any other job-related duties as assigned by the President and Vice President or the leadership team at large.
- Assist with planning, organizing and developing content for CIPL workshops, roundtables and other events.
- Assist, where appropriate, with internal CIPL administrative tasks, such as organization of internal documents and other written resources, internal project management, planning and coordination among team members.
About You:

- Excellent writing, analytical, and public speaking skills; ability to distill and present complex information and concepts in a user-friendly way;
- Ability to conduct and/or lead research on emerging data privacy laws, data policy developments and organisational best practices and related legal developments;
- Keen understanding of technology and trends, strong interest in data privacy and data policy and how to enable responsible uses of data in the modern information age, while protecting rights of individuals;
- Strong interpersonal skill, team spirit, entrepreneurial spirit and proactive attitude, ready to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders;
- Ability to work independently and under tight deadlines in a dynamic on the go environment.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Legal degree (preferred) and/or relevant Master’s degree.
- Three to five years of demonstrated experience with international data privacy law, policy and best practices and/or digital data policy.
- In-house experience in a privacy or data policy role, in government or private sector, consultancy, law firm or think-tank / academia.
- Experience writing public consultation responses, white papers or articles on issues related to privacy and data policy and laws.
- Foreign language proficiency preferred.

Day-to-day Responsibilities Include:
- Research and provide regular updates and insights on the global developments, debates and challenges at organizational and governmental policy levels on topics including: the scope of application of special rules; age verification; age of children’s consent and parental consent; legal bases for processing; transparency; risk-based approach to regulation and compliance; protective mechanisms; exercise of children’s rights; balancing the benefits of children’s use of online services against the risks; online safety and security standards for processing children’s data.
- Prepare talking points and PowerPoint presentations for CIPL’s Director of EU Privacy & Data Policy and CIPL’s President and other relevant CIPL staff. Draft event takeaways. Create project plans and track deliverables.
- Draft white papers, research memoranda, meeting reports, articles and blogs on the above issues and provide input to CIPL’s white papers, public consultation responses and other relevant written materials.
- Assist with planning, organizing and developing content for CIPL workshops, roundtables and other events including outreach to members, policymakers, regulators and academia.
- Assist with special projects and perform any other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of EU Privacy & Data Policy and CIPL’s President.
- Assist, where appropriate, with internal CIPL administrative tasks, such as managing website content, organization of internal documents and other written resources, internal project management, planning and coordination among team members.
About You:
You will have:
- Superb writing, analytical, and public speaking skills. The ability to distill and explain complex technical concepts to privacy and data protection law and policy experts, regulators, policy makers and lay audiences in a clear and persuasive manner.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct and lead research on privacy law, policy and organizational best practices.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal skills, entrepreneurial spirit and proactive attitude and eagerness to engage, expand horizons and collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Candidate must hold at least a Master’s degree (Legal degree preferred) and related work experience is preferred.
- Two+ years of experience with international data privacy law, policy and best practices and/or digital data policy.
- Experience writing public consultation responses, white papers or articles on issues related to privacy and data policy and laws.
- Native English fluency or C2 English fluency in European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).
