Current CIPL Projects
Enabling Data Driven Innovation and Big Data
The world of big data demands new and innovative solutions that simultaneously enable benefits from data-driven products and services and the protection of individuals and their personal information. This is a task facing all governments, regulators and business leaders as they devise appropriate policies, rules and practices. Without new solutions, we will not be able to realise the critical societal objectives of fostering a sustainable data-driven economy and digitally enabled society and protecting privacy. Any new solutions must be able to maximise each of these goals. Accomplishing this will require creativity and the will to re-think our traditional approaches to information management and privacy regulation. CIPL is pursuing several projects to further these goals (see list below).

EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Implementation
The political agreement on the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has been reached and the new Regulation will be on the books by the end of the first quarter of 2016. Organisations will have a two year period (spring 2016-spring 2018) to assess the impact of the Regulation on their activities, devise and execute implementation strategies and make changes to their business processes, compliance infrastructures and IT systems to reflect the new requirements. The new regime will bring changes not only to organisations, but also to the data protection authorities and how they oversee, supervise and enforce the new rules in Europe. To address these changes, CIPL is launching a special project in March 2016 – the CIPL PROJECT ON GDPR IMPLENTATION.

Enabling Global Data Flows
The free-flow of data is foundational to the modern information economy. At the same time, cross-border data transfers have raised concerns among regulators and privacy advocates, which has resulted in a trend towards data localization policies and restrictions on cross-border transfers of personal data. Thus, one of CIPL’s major work streams concerns the development and promotion of effective and accountable cross-border information management and transfer mechanisms.

Regional Focus and Outreach
CIPL seeks to engage with privacy regulators around the world on the important privacy and information management issues of the day. We regularly participate in and speak at gatherings of global privacy regulators, organize delegation visits to them or host meetings for them at our offices. We also prepare public comments in response to public consultations of government authorities and regulators.

Cybersecurity
As part of our comprehensive approach to effective and responsible information management, CIPL focuses on developments in cybersecurity. Our principal activities on that front have been periodic Cybersecurity Briefings for our members and data breach tutorials.
